Andrew Jackson arrived at The Hermitage in 1804 with nine slaves. By 1821, Jackson owned 50 slaves through births and additional purchases. In 1823 Jackson sold a plantation he owned in Alabama and brought another 30 enslaved African Americans here. . . Faced with a pressing need for additional slave housing, he built several new cabins and converted his old log farmhouse into a one-story slave cabin. Over the next 30 years, Jackson’s slave population continued to grow, peaking at 150. . . This photo shows Alfred outside of the First Hermitage. . . Tom Morales, owner of Acme Feed & Seed, has opened a new restaurant called Woolworth on 5th that pays homage to Nashville's civil rights movement. While you grab some grub at his restaurant, make sure to stop by Rivive Nashville's mural at the corner of 5th and Commerce in downtown Nashville. https://www.tennessean.com/picture-gallery/news/2018/02/01/iconic-lunch-counter-restored-at-woolworth-on-5th/110019892/

Iconic lunch counter restored at Woolworth on 5th
Tom Morales' new restaurant, Woolworth on 5th, pays homage to Nashville's civil rights history. The space was once home to a lunch counter at a department store that turned people away based on race and was the site of several sit-ins during the 1960s. Now it has been reimagined into a restaurant and live music venue.
