Fwd:: DOCTOR ALERT: If you are considering seeing Dr. Wellons for treatment of either Chiari Malformation or Tethered Cord (TSC) .. or another neurosurgical related condition needing surgery -- Please for your sake, and for the sake of both you and your child, stay CLEAR of Vanderbilt University Medical Center as well as Children's Hospital for Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. Wellons has operated on at least two girls with Chiari for decompression surgery that's resulted in their deaths. I share this information with you all because it's vital when choosing a Pediatric Neurosurgeon/Neurosurgeon to treat your Chiari/EDS or TSC that you research and vet them well! Don't settle for the first specialist you find .. keep on looking, researching, making phone calls, asking us here for help with referrals -- because the surgery for the treatment of Chiari/TSC and EDS related TSC is serious. You don't want just anyone operating on your brain for Chiari decompression or your neck for fusion surgery .. or your spine for Tethered Cord release surgery! Even though it takes extra time, that extra time done for researching is important. Never stop asking questions, whether it's here in this support group, or directly to your Pediatric Neurosurgeon/Neurologist (if there's headaches/migraines/seizures or other neuro related condition(s) ) If you don't get the answers you're in need of -- especially if it's regarding upcoming surgery or the decision to have surgery. It's far better to wait and find the 'right' Neurosurgeon than it is to 'simply settle!' Because, settling can end in dire consequences. <3 Dr. John C. Wellons, CV ~ from Vanderbilt Univ Medical Center's webpage: Dr. Wellons is Professor of Neurological Surgery, Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Professor of Pediatrics. He was the Site Investigator for the private and NIH-funded Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN), and continues as the Primary Investigator for ongoing studies related to HCRN. His additional research and clinical interests include the role of neuroendoscopy in the treatment of pediatric brain tumors and hydrocephalus, improving surgical outcomes in Chiari and Chiari-related disorders, and anatomic and surgical studies of the brachial plexus and peripheral nerves. ** How we can help remember and honor Laycee Bryant: Because he is an active site investigator for the HCRN (Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network) funded by NIH and from private donors, I'd encourage everyone to send a copy of this video with an email to the IRB of the NIH and ask that they investigate him and have the state of TN Board of Medical Review also launch an investigation into his surgical records and review any/all surgeries performed on children/adults for Chiari. The NIH can then contact the HCRN and yank him as an investigator as well as pressure the state of TN to pull his medical license. As he's tenured .. this is most likely the best way we can help JD Bryant's family and any others who've been affected by Dr Wellons. ** Education: Dr. Wellons received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, Miss. He completed his Master of Science in Public Health in Clinical Research (Epidemiology) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Postgraduate Training: Dr. Wellons completed his residency in Neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center, as well as a fellowship in stroke research there. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Alabama. Current Research Interests: ** PLEASE NOTE: Chiari Malformation is NOT listed here ** Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN) Endoscopic minimally invasive procedures Brachial plexus and peripheral nerve treatment ** The settings on this post are public, so please share this far and wide. Please however make sure that when you share this, you use cut and paste feature and create a brand new post. In order to have the video link work, you will have to click into the video link and copy and paste it back into your new post/document. Thanks <3 .. ** This is video is of JD Bryant's daughter Laycee -- JD was Laycee's dad and Laycee 4 months ago began having horrible headaches and symptoms of Chiari and TSC. Her parents the Bryants took her to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital looking for answers and Dr. Wellons took on their daughter's care. Vanderbilt Univ Med Ctr is not known for their Pediatric Nsg or Neurosurgery or Neurology Departments. This past December she had decompression surgery to treat her Chiari and it was badly botched. It left Laycee unable to speak, and pretty much left her with symptoms of a stroke. She sadly passed away on/around 1/31/17 and her funeral was yesterday. :( https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=396759560716295&id=100011467626110&__mref=message_bubble&hc_location=ufi
