Thank you to everyone who joined us for yesterday's Lunch & Learn lecture with Jack May about his uncle Mortimer May, and Candace Adelson, Ph.D., senior curator of fashion & textiles, Tennessee State Museum, about our Holocaust Survivors' Crate. Pictured in the group photo, from left, are Rachel Helvering, community engagement manager, Tennessee State Museum; Rodney Rosenblum, donor of crate; Adelson; May; Ashley Howell, executive director, Tennessee State Museum; and Dan Pomeroy, chief curator and director of collections, Tennessee State Museum. The Holocaust survivors' crate will be on display through this Sunday, May 18.
It’s the 251st birthday of Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States, born #onthisday in 1767. We commemorate it with a Ralph E.W. Earl oil-on-canvas painting that marks the time that it all began for Jackson, and maybe the Tennessee State Museum. This large portrait from our collection shows Jackson on the battlefield at New Orleans, where the general became a U. S. hero with his victory over the British in 1815. This painting and one of Napoleon were two of the objects specifically mentioned as having been displayed in Nashville's first museum, located on the city square and started by the Earl, c. 1817. We invite you to visit the State Museum to view our Jackson collection, but also highly recommend a visit to our friends down the road in Hermitage at Andrew Jackson's Hermitage.
If you’re in downtown Nashville and looking for something to do today, we’re open! Get out of the cold and come see us. Open until 5 p.m. at the corner of 5th and Deaderick.
