Do you remember in last week’s article the family who owned the land that included 309, 311, and 313 North Main Street?

Springfield Tour of Homes: the McMurry House
OK, let's start with a quick quiz. Do you remember in last week's article the family who owned the land that included 309, 311, and 313 North Main Street? That's right, the Eckles family. Lizzie Eckles married prominent tobacco businessman William McMurry, and in June of 1891, they were deeded property on North Main Street from the heirs of Isham A.

Previewing Springfield's Tour of Homes: the Eckles House

Such is the case for the house at 311 North Main Street.

The property, taking in 309, 311, and 313 North Main Street, all goes back to Isham Eckles, who ran a drugstore on the east side of the Square in Springfield. He bought two and one quarter acres on Russellville Road from T.M. Henry in 1855.

A lot on the northern portion of the property fronting 91 feet and 6 inches was sold at public auction to J.W. Dean for $261. This is the lot at 309 North Main where the Onstotts now live.

Althea Gibson Documentary Presented by One Lo...

Althea Gibson Documentary Presented by One Love @ Franklin Theatre Althea Gibson Screening – the life story of the Wimbledon Champion Althea Gibson, a truant from the rough streets of Harlem, emerged as a most unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950’s. Her life and achievements transcend Sports. Her roots as a sharecropper’s daughter, her family’s migration north to Harlem in the 30’s, her mentoring from Sugar Ray Robinson, David Dinkins and others, her fame that thrust her unwillingly into the glare of the early Civil Rights movement, all bring the story into a much broader realm of African-American History. No player overcame more obstacles to become a champion than Althea Gibson, the first African-American to play at Wimbledon and Forest Hills, a decade before the great Arthur Ashe. She would receive two ticker-tape parades in New York, and later brought her talents to golf, breaking another color barrier: the LPGA, where she competed for over 10 years. She retired from competitive tennis and played exhibitions on tour with the Harlem Globetrotters, became a recorded Jazz singer, performing on the Ed Sullivan Show and “What’s My Line”, and landing a role in a John Wayne/John Ford film.
