Gene Merritts turns 89 years old on Monday. He's celebrating the way someone young enough to be his great-grandson might: with a birthday bash on Lower Broadway. Merritts, better known as "Pappy" (a nickname he picked up from college-aged castmates during his 24 years with Opryland's "Country Music USA"), is the longtime fiddler for John England and the Western Swingers.
