Second person arrested for Nashville beating death

Police said Gerold Askew, 52, was arrested on Friday afternoon for his alleged role in the beating death of Alfred Jenkins, 54, who died this week at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being assaulted on May 2 near the intersection of Lincoln and Lafayette streets.

South Nashville Action People is meeting at the SNAP Center (1224 Martin St) at 9 a.m. to clean up until noon. Afterward, the group will gather at Falcon Coffee Bar (509 Houston St).

Trimble Action Group will start at 8 a.m. at Johnson School (1200 2nd Ave S)

Quarterly Chestnut Hill Neighborhood Watch meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Safe Haven (1234 3rd Ave S).

Fourteen arrests, student and officers injured in brawl at Nashville school

Police spokesman Don Aaron said officers responded to Johnson Alternative Learning Center at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday after fights began breaking out at the school at 1200 2nd Avenue South just south of downtown.

An appeal for an owner-occupied short-term rental permit at 18 Claiborne St. I've spoken with the owner and am supporting this request, as she has taken all the necessary steps to turn in her paperwork, including neighbor input/notifications.

District 17 is about to have a lot of cases coming up in front of the Board of Zoning Appeals, which meets Thursday at 1 p.m. at Howard Office Building (700 2nd Ave S.). You can see the agenda here. The three D17 items on April 5 are as follows:

An appeal for a short-term rental permit at 836 Glen Ave. I've received probably a dozen emails against this permit, and a couple in favor. At this point, I don't like the direction this is headed. I'd say if you feel strongly on this one, try to make the meeting.

An appeal to not re-do the sidewalk at 1009 Caldwell Ave. If the applicant pays into the in-lieu-of fund, I'm OK with it.
