Fisk University opens 'World War I and The Great Migration'
In its latest exhibition, Fisk University's Carl Van Vechten Gallery commemorates the 100th anniversary of America's entry into WWI and highlights its role in The Great Migration. To escape harsh segregationist laws and inequitable economic opportunity, millions of African-Americans relocated from the rural south to the urban centers of the North, Midwest, and West between 1916-1970.

Good news and bad news from 2017 on the cheap retail front

Amy Bradford opened Black Dog Book Co. used bookstore in November at 4006 Granny White Pike in the former Rhino Books space. The inventory is “used, loved, shared” and most of the books are priced at about half of original retail. For more details: 615-649-8844 or email blackdogbookco@gmail.com.

I was afraid that SmART!, the thrift shop that sells donated arts and crafts supplies to support Progress Inc., would go out of business when its lease was up in Berry Hill, but instead it found a nice new location at 2416 Music Valley Drive.

English & Company home furnishings consignment shop, which moved to 118 Powell Place six years ago, has more than doubled its space by taking over a 10,000 square foot warehouse behind the store. For more details: 615-315-5589 or englishandcompanytn.com.

Rhino Books on Granny White Pike closed in October, and consolidated into its 4918 Charlotte Pike location. https://rhinobooksnashville.com/

Good news and bad news from 2017 on the cheap retail front
CLOSE The end of the year is a good time to take stock, by recalling the good and the bad news that the year has seen. On the cheap front, of course. And 2017 has had some of both.
