Ms. Cheap: 13 free things to do this week in the Nashville area

The Franklin Kids Arts Festival of Tennessee is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday  at Pinkerton Park, 405 Murfreesboro Road. This event features a juried art exhibit and stage performances.

Nashville's 24th annual Movies in the Park will be in Elmington Park, 3531 West End Ave., on Thursdays in June. The first movie is "Coco" on June 7. Pre-movie fun, including games, giveaways, food trucks and other vendors, starts at 5 p.m. Movies begin at dusk. Details: 615-862-8400.

    Memorial Day may have been the official start of summer, but this weekend really has it all going on, with the Big Band Dances and Red Caboose concerts cranking up, National Trails Day hikes all over the state, Murfreesboro's Friday night live concert, and the Crockett Park concert series starting Sunday.

Ms. Cheap's Guide to Summer 2018: 94 free things to do around Nashville

The City of Franklin offers outdoor family movies at 8 p.m. at Pinkerton Park, 405 Murfreesboro Road. On June 22, it is "LEGO Ninjago Movie," and on July 13, it's "Descendants 2."

The super interactive "spray pad" at Cumberland Park, 592 S. First St., is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 6...

The 12th annual Hot Chicken Festival is July 4 at East Park, 700 Woodland St. The rain-or-shine event starts with a parade of fire trucks at 10:30 a.m. You can try free hot chicken samples from numerous local hot chicken establishments. There is live music and kids activities.

Bells Bend Nature Park, at 4187 Old Hickory Blvd., will celebrate its 10th birthday June 9 with a day of hikes and other programs. The park also has a Pioneer Game Day scheduled for 10 a.m. June 16 for ages 6-12 and other programs through the summer. 

The Franklin Farmers Market is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the back of The Factory at Franklin, 230 Franklin Road. In addition to the produce, it features live music and family events, including a tomato festival on July 14 and a watermelon festival on August 18.

The band will also play at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ's annual "One Nation Under God" concert at 6:30 p.m. July 1. There will be free ice cream and a professional fireworks display on the church lawn, 1949 Old Hickory Blvd., Brentwood.

This concert series from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays in The Grove at Fontanel, 4241 Whites Creek Pike, runs through June 21.

...living history event is June 23 at the historic Amqui Station and Visitor’s Center, 303 Madison St. The event includes the living history encampment, guest speakers, vendors, exhibits, a Stage Door Canteen...

There are plenty of local galleries, and many have receptions for exhibit openings. They include: Vanderbilt's Fine Arts Gallery in Cohen Memorial Hall, 1220 21st Ave. S., where the exhibit through July 14 is "America Creative: Portraits by Everett Raymond Kinstler."

Goodlettsville has a Music on Main summer concert series with live music, food trucks, and a kids zone from 6:30-8 p.m. at Goodlettsville City Hall, 105 S Main St. The lineup: June 7, Martin Family Circus; June 21, Adam Cunningham from "The Voice;" July 5 South Street Players; and July 19, TBD.
